Healthy Home Habits: Part 6 - The Power of Scent: Creating a Fragrant Haven

Welcome back to our Healthy Home Habits series! This month, the theme inside Happybeams & Co. has been 'Home Wellbeing', so we wanted to dive into the world of scent and fragrance, as this can often be an area that's somewhat forgotten about in the world of interiors.

At Happybeams, it's not just about how a room looks, but instead we like to focus on how a room makes you feel - everything from the layout, the colours, the textures, the lighting and of course the fragrance.

I'm sure you've noticed when you walk into a pleasant smelling room, how it can lift your mood, as opposed to a not-so-great-smelling room, which can make you feel on edge or a little miserable!

The Science of Smell

Our sense of smell is a powerful tool that can significantly impact our mood, memory, and overall wellbeing. It's the first sense to develop in infants and remains remarkably sensitive throughout our lives. Our noses are equipped with millions of odour-detecting cells that work tirelessly to capture and process the myriad of scents that surround us.

Interestingly, our sense of smell is influenced by the seasons. The increased humidity in spring and summer enhances our ability to detect odours, making fragrant experiences even more pronounced. We often associate specific scents with particular times of the year, from the fresh-cut grass of summer to the cosy warmth of cinnamon in winter.

What truly sets smell apart is its direct connection to the emotional centre of our brain, the limbic system. This is where our feelings, memories, and moods are processed. When we encounter a familiar scent, it can instantly transport us back to a specific time or place, evoking a flood of emotions. This powerful association is why fragrances can be so effective in influencing our mood.

Research has consistently demonstrated the positive impact of scent on our well-being. Aromatherapy, the therapeutic use of essential oils, has been shown to reduce anxiety, improve sleep quality, and enhance cognitive function. Studies have even revealed that certain scents, such as lemon, can boost productivity and focus.

While fragrances aren't a cure-all for mental health conditions, they can undoubtedly contribute to a more positive and uplifting environment. Therapist and women's health practitioner Hayley Merrick emphasises the role of aromatherapy in balancing emotions and relieving anxiety. Citrus scents, in particular, are known for their mood-lifting properties, while geranium and bergamot offer calming and balancing effects.

Creating a Fresh Fragrance Foundation

Before we dive into the delightful world of fragrance, it's essential to create a clean canvas for your scents to shine. Odours can linger in our homes, often going unnoticed due to sensory adaptation. To ensure a fresh and inviting atmosphere, follow these tips:

  • Tackle moisture: High humidity can contribute to odour buildup. Use dehumidifiers and regularly replace or wash damp items like sponges and towels.

  • Conquer odour sources: Pay close attention to areas like bins, pet beds, and the fridge. Regular cleaning is essential to prevent unpleasant smells.

  • Harness the power of fresh air: Open windows whenever possible to let in fresh air and eliminate stale odours.

  • Clean fabrics: Carpets, upholstery, and curtains can harbour odours. Regular cleaning, including professional steam cleaning, can make a significant difference.

Infusing Your Home with Fragrance

Now comes the fun part: filling your home with delightful scents. Here are some creative ways to enhance your space:

  • Embrace the beauty of nature: Incorporate plants, fresh herbs, and flowers for natural fragrance and visual appeal.

  • Unlock the power of essential oils: Explore the world of essential oils through diffusers, sachets, and DIY sprays.

  • Create a cosy atmosphere: Simmer pots, candles, and dryer sheets can add warmth and charm to your home.

If you fancy creating your own fabric spray, here is a simple recipe you can try...

DIY Fabric Spray Recipe

To eliminate pet odours and freshen up fabrics, try this homemade spray:

  • 1 tablespoon baking soda

  • 30 drops essential oil of your choice

  • 2 cups distilled water

Combine the baking soda and essential oil in a spray bottle, then add the water. Shake well before each use.

By understanding the science of smell and implementing these tips, you can transform your home into a fragrant sanctuary that promotes relaxation, wellbeing, and a sense of calm.

Stay tuned for next month's Healthy Home Habits!
