Bedside Styling In Five Simple Steps

Writer's picture: Jess BlakeJess Blake

I don't know about you but if my bedside table is looking tidy, and I have everything I need for the final steps of my evening routine, I tend to get into bed at a sensible hour much more readily, and quite often sleep better too.

Do we need any more reason than that to give our bedsides a little rethink?

@happybeams

I thought I'd break it down into five simple steps, and hopefully if something isn't sitting quite right with your current bedside set up, this might give you a little nudge in the right direction!

1. HOW MUCH STUFF DO YOU NEED?

First things first, you need to decide if you like a minimal, clutter free bedside or if you actually prefer to have lots of different items that you love on display.

For me, I like somewhere in the middle. I find an empty bedside can look a little uninviting but also too much clutter and I'm aware of it when I'm in bed.

2. TRAYS ARE YOUR FRIEND

If you have a small collection or a whole array of items, you'll be amazed at what a difference a tray can make. It will ground that area, make cleaning the surface so much easier, and really give the overall look a more pulled together feel.

If you don't have a tray the right size, try laying down a book to create the same idea or you can use a small dish to group similar items and organise the space.

3. THE ESSENTIALS

If you like to have a box of tissues on your bedside, perhaps invest in a box cover like this one to make it more in keeping with your décor. Or if you have medication by your bed, a small trinket box could keep them neatly tucked away.

4. LET'S TALK ABOUT LIGHTING

You may already have a bedside lamp but have a think whether it's the right proportion for the size of your room, or could you perhaps do with a little more space on your bedside? You could consider fitting a plug in wall light instead like this one from Arle House?

5. SOMETHING LIVING

Greenery or flowers will instantly change the feel of a bedside. I mix up succulents, silk roses and faux stems in a vase.

Alternatively you could keep a candle by your bed to light while you read (just don't forget to blow it out!), or a mirror to bounce the evening light around. Even a photo of your loved ones - which is especially lovely as the first thing you see in the morning!

So, how do you feel about your bedside? Do you think you might try any of these steps to change things up a little?

It's also something you can consider for when you're travelling - do you take a little pouch to keep your jewellery tucked away overnight or a small bag with your pillow spray and medication in? I sometimes give a hotel bedside a little declutter if there are too many bits out, or rearrange things slightly - maybe that's just me?

I couldn't write this blog post without including this adorable bedside shot from @dougs_digs! Doug I think ahs to be my favourite Instagram cat - just look at that pose!

Hope that's been helpful, let me know over on my Instagram post who's bedsides you're swooning over!

Thanks so much for reading x
